Dubliners is a collection of short stories depicting middle class life in Dublin in the early 20th century. First published in 1914, the stories draw on themes relevant to the time such as nationalism and Ireland’s national identity, and cement Joyce’s reputation for brutally honest and revealing depictions of everyday Irish life. At the heart of each story is a character’s moment of self-realization which serves to further heighten our understanding of life in James Joyce’s Dublin.

James Joyce was a genius. He wrote some short stories. Read them and if you like them, move on to the harder stuff, Portrait of The Artist and Ulysses. If you don't like them, wait a few years and try again.
Whats not to love?
My college education was pre-med, but I still consider myself an educated person. I knew about James Joyce, of course, but I had never read him. When others talked about his books I just slunk away, saying I had to go to the bathroom or something. Finally, I decided to bite the bullet sink or swim, do or die. I had the idea that Dubliners was as hard a read as Ulysses, but thank goodness it is not. It's just short stories, low key short stories about people whose lives are not much, and are not going to be much. The stories were okay, and maybe I am not educated enough to appreciate them. I read them all. They are not stream-of-consciousness, they are not obtuse, they are not bewildering. I should have read Dubliners years ago and avoided telling all those people I had to go to the bathroom or something.
I've always struggled with Joyce and probably still will. The notes were very helpful, they enabled me to get more from the text.
Ok, the book was only 99¢. Since the book is in the public domain and readily available online for free, maybe it was 99¢ too high.
I bought this one for the annotations. As I read them, I thought, I have seen this before...
Wikipedia. 1 star for a clean copy, but that's probably being generous. No stars for Wikipedia.
Annotations, by the way, are NOT an add-on bio, lifted from Wikipedia.
Another reviewer said the notes were helpful, which is good, but it still is cloned from Wikipedia.
I had to read this book for English class. I didn't enjoy the book itself very much but the fact that I was able to download and use it for free was really great.
I'd never read anything by Joyce in the past. Despite this and the fact that I'm sure many references went over my head, I highly enjoyed this book. I can understand why this would be a classic. While I was hoping for an annotated version and searched high and low for one in either e-book or print version, I was still able to enjoy this literary masterpiece. Great writing transcends time and this did that in my opinion. Joyce is amazing at capturing emotion and the human condition; surprisingly of both men and women! If you're looking for an annotated version this is not that; it simply contains some Wikipedia references. I may have given 5 stars if it truly had been annotated (which may have added to my reading experience). Overall a great read despite the lack of annotations.
When I picked Dubliners, I thought it was a novel. I kept on reading what I thought were chapters, but they led no where, only to another chapter. I thought, Joyce must be joining their tales at some point. He never did. Only when coming back to this webpage did I learn these were short stories. Surprise.
His language and images are remarkable. A body is a harp. Read it to find what the strings are.
Apparently the most noticeable of all characteristics--at least in Joyce's mind-- is their love of alcohol. Life begins and ends with imbibing mind- and temper-altering liquids such as stout. No AA in Dublin at that time.
I doubt if I would have picked the book to read had I known it was a book of glimpses of anyone off the street. After a while, boring indeed.
His language and images are wonderful, but the sameness is mind-petrifying.
