Dear Reader,
Sean Pierce will tell you his story, but know that it is the story of many people. While fictional, the characters and events are rooted in true stories. These are the moments and words of friends. These are the moments and words of strangers met in passing. These are my moments and words, some I regret and some I would never change. They all taught me who I wanted to be.
I want to thank those that endured past the breaking point to become the phenomenal people that inspired this story. I want to thank those that helped me find my pieces during my own experiences. I want to thank those that broke me. Because of you, I broke free from the part of me that was trying to break other people, and I put myself back together into someone stronger.
And I want to thank you for your support. The world breaks you down. People break you down. Being broken breaks you down. Some people put themselves back together, and some don't. Some become better than they ever were before because falling apart breaks what has been really hurting them the whole time. What everybody does at some point--what Sean can't stop for himself or those around him--is break. Just remember that we all break, and that if we are brave enough to put ourselves back together, we can become more beautiful than we ever were before.

This isn't my normal genre. Too much talk of God for my taste, but it did manage to hold my attention. Mostly because the story was pretty real, even if way too many bad things happened in that little town. (Remind me never to visit Deer Creek!)The story was thought provoking, and pretty accurate in the bigoted way people think sometimes. I had a friend in middle school, dated him a few times throughout our school careers, and we are still close friends to this day. This story hit for me because his father was gay, and even though I never heard our group of friends say one bad thing about him or his father, (mind you this was back in the early to mid 90's before being gay was more accepted) I wonder if he ever had these feelings about finding out. He's really close to his dad, and was always close as far as I know, maybe he didn't feel like Sean did because his friends readily accepted him and his father. Sometimes true friend can change the course for anyone. Or maybe we were all raised to not judge or hate people. Our town wasn't southern, and we didn't have class discussions about God or his beliefs, so that could be it too.
And that is where this story went overkill on me. I don't know a single public school today that allows that kind of discussion to take over the class room. Or a school that allows so much hatred. Kids are cruel, and maybe that's the point of writing in those class discussions, but reading about this town made me feel like I was reading about a cult. An entire cult town.
In the end it was a touching story with a valid meaning. It was well written, and over all it held my interest. I give the heart of the story 5 stars. The town of Deer Creek (I hope it's fictional) 1 star. A completely twisted town with a lot of really nasty people that I would never want to be a part of.

As We Break edition by EE Martin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book truly touched me. I grew up in a small Southern town, and the characters in this book feel like they've been plucked from my own memories. I connected very quickly with Sean and was engrossed by his tale.
The novel is centered around a beautiful message about growing up, about overcoming the darkness both within and without and coming out stronger on the other side. Sean goes through so many challenges and is forced to deal with some heavy issues, and yet through it all he remains relatable. I found myself rooting him and feeling his pain (and his joy) right along with him.
The story is gutsy, funny and well-paced, and the ending left me in tears. The book is just beautiful. It's not just another coming of age story - As We Break is deep and heartfelt, and well worth the read. Well done, E. E. Martin. Well done.
Of all the books I have read in the past year, this one proved to be the most insightful, though provoking, raw, & real account of a small town struggling with universal issues.
The author does not back away from the real issues in family dynamics, how those play into the personalities and actions & reactions of teens, sexual abuse, the struggle to understand and love unconditionally someone who does not prescribe to your own moral mindset.
I found that I was able to truly connect with the characters, their flaws, and their strengths. There was no sugar coating of the effect of how one's upbringing affects their daily choices and struggles. In the end the point that we all break was driven home; it's how we rebuild stronger, by choosing not only unconditional love, but self love, and the ability to make tougher-than-nails choices to help someone else rebuild is how we create our stronger self & family.
I would recommend this year for anyone and everyone.
As We Break is a great read, though high school is years past for me, this story will take anyone from a rural town back, finding themselves and everyone they knew scattered throughout the characters. Each one made real by problems and events that are faced by those of all ages, shaping us to who we've become as we overcome them ourselves. From sexuality, to religion, to painful experiences, this book covers all the bases, however the book is not a depressing read, it has it's moments, but instead it's overall uplifting, leading us to reflecting on how we've been re-assembled after something has broken us in the end.
It took a long time to get into this book, I persevered because of all the positive reviews I read. I am so glad I did, as, although it took a long time to get to the point, it was well worth the wait, and in retrospect maybe to get there faster would have made it seem too easy. The main characters were likable, and thankfully Sean sorted out the others in the end! From a prejudice point of view I am glad I read the book, as from a stance of disinterest, bordering on intolerance, my views have softened to acceptance since reading As We Break.
While this is a fictional story which is inspired by true stories, I found it more believable as the situations of this book really do relate to actual events that can and do happen in the lives of the young and old. We all deal with different circumstances that make our lives difficult to sometimes endure or wonder how if we can ever get past them. This story captures the reader interest by the variety of unfortunate circumstances that Sean has to deal with and how he deals with them. It is a great example of how easily one’s spirit can break and how hard it can be to rebuild it. It is a good read for a short book and one I believe to be a good read for young adults, especially those who may be dealing with situations that test their strength, or dealing with a similar situation.
